MTUC holds congress

03 March 2023 – Maldives Trade Union Congress (MTUC) a key party involved in the future of employment and occupational health and safety in the Maldives has held its 1st congress.

The Maldives Trade Union Congress (MTUC) event involved key political figures along with a speech given by President Ibrahim Solih who highlighted the importance of the work done by the trade union and assured the members that the current government’s efforts are in line with the union’s efforts as well. The president highlight key points as:

  • Implementation of minimum wage during his term
  • Recent ratifications to service charge distribution
  • Creation of the National Job Center

The president went on to mention policies on major issues which are currently in the process such as:

  • An Industrial Relation Bill allowing for collective bargaining
  • A Occupational Health and Safety Bill protecting worker’s safety in the workplace
  • A system under discussion for Unemployment insurance

Maldives Trade Union Congress was joined by representatives from the Tourism industry and Tourism and Health sector.
